When I was growing up we only had triangular sandwiches when we had company, and then they were cut into dainty quarters. Funny enough, they did seem to taste better! They say presentation contributes almost as much to your enjoyment of food as taste, right enough.
I remember triangular sandwiches as a kid and would enjoy the taste a lot more because they always appeared smaller therefore within a few bites I was wanting more! however the rectangle ones look bigger and therefore may not appear as tastier. I know if there is something small on my plate like in a fancy restuarant I relish eating it and savour it, whereas a big portion isnt as appealing!
I think with me it was just that my mom refused to cut them into triangles (she always cut them into rectangles)so when I was old enough to make my own sandwiches, I always cut triangles.
Now it really bothers me. Which is really which? But for me, I prefer the rectangular shape; maybe it is the traditional way or something more than a theory.
I think triangle shaped was preferred by people because it fits into you mouth in a much more civilized way. You don't have to open your mouth so wide to get the sandwich in. Sandwiches cut into smaller shapes are good too, the kind you cut with cookie cutters.

You know, I hadn't thought about the condiments. You're absolutely right. Everytime I make a sandwich, most of the mayo is towards the center of the bread.
