Children and Make-up

At what age do you think it is acceptable for little girls to wear make-up?

I was in the hair salon the other day and there was a little girl must have been no more than 5 wearing blusher, blue eyeshadow and bright red lipstick! I know the colours are awful but besides that is she too young?

Maybe she'd been to one of those new stores that are springing up where the kids have makeover parties. I don't know what they're called but my niece went to one that her friend was having as a birthday treat with her pals and they got makeup, nails and hair done. Apparently it's specifically aimed at pre-teens. She's 11 right enough but makeup at five seems a bit strange if it wasn't that she'd been to one of those types of parties.

Unless it was the only way her mom could get her out of the house fast enough too to make her hair appointment, then I'm all for it. I'd taken mine out to town in a Spiderman outfit before in the height of summer.

The biggest thing that hurts me is a little girl wearing makeup. It is not the child and not the promotion of products by the company,it is the parents of the child who are to be blamed. They are the ones to teach the child the dos and the don't s.

I agree I think at this age its not right, the woman actually owned the hair salon or part ownership and when I arrived her daughter was au naturel lol the next thing she appeared covered in make-up, I wonder whether it was because I am British sitting in a Tunisian/Arabic hair salon and she felt the need to do something haha but it was sad to see.

That age is just way too young, unless they were having one of those little girl dress parties as Drizzle just mentioned.

The thing that makes me sick to my stomach are the moms that put their little 4 year olds in beauty pageants wearing bikinis with their faces caked with more make up than Boy George. I am sure this will offend some pageant moms, but I have just never understood the concept of this. We are supposed to be teaching little girls to love themselves for who they are and not how they look, and yet they are already being conditioned to think that looks is what makes you win and get the prizes and attention.

I think a child does not have to wear make up because they have still a delicate and sensitive skin. A face that’s natural is a face that’s good without make up. I mostly appreciate the beauty of the children who does not wear make up.

That's a very good point. My cousin who was 9 at the time washed his face with this anti acne treatment because he thought it just face soap. Well it is face soap but it is not really intended for kids and his face ended up breaking out in a rash. The same goes for many make ups too. If parents MUST put make up on their kids, I would hope they are reading the labels carefully first.

I think seeing little girls wearing make-up is really sad. I don't see how these moms allow their daughters who are so young to wear make-up. I think the perfect grade to let your daughter wear make-up is if they are in the 7th or 8th grade.
