Acne is caused by a variety of factors.

For example, during the phase of puberty for most teenagers, their hormones go wild, overproduce, thus increasing the production of sebum in the sebaceous glands in the skin. Because of this, there is greater chance for clogged pores, in turn a greater chance for bacteria to get trapped in the pores as well.

Luckily, for most of them the acne goes away in time, with a good face wash and possibly benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. The other group of acne sufferers aren't so fortunate, and they continue to suffer from acne due to other reasons.

Adults suffer from acne as well, just not as common as teenagers. For example, my cousin suffered from acne starting at age 25. The reason this happened was because he moved from China to the US, where his diet dramatically changed from healthy foods all the time to unhealthy fast food meals everyday. He had to treat this with Accutane in order to become acne free.

So, acne isn't some simple solution.
