Will JJ Abrams save or kill off "Star Trek"?

Although very little is known about the storyline of next year's Star Trek movie, fans of the 42-year-old franchise are both eager and apprehensive about what changes, exactly, will be made to the time line as they know it of The Original Series.

The movie has been in production for a while now and we know that "Lost" and "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams is directing, that two writers known for Transformers and Mission Impossible III wrote the screenplay, and that it will be a prequel to the show. It's set, as was an aborted project by Harve Bennett a decade ago, during James T. Kirk's Academy days and is an "untold" story that takes place aboard a brand-new original Starship Enterprise.

Considering that the backstory to Capt. Kirk (played here by Chris Pine) has never mentioned any secret missions aboard the Enterprise before the five-year mission of the William Shatner era, it will be interesting to see if Abrams' prequel will be accepted by the fans or finish off the Star Trek franchise.

What do you think?
