Titanic hit an iceberg an sank in 1912. This time, though, it was not an iceberg that toppled it, but a 3D film. Avatar stole its crown as the all-time global box office champ.

Conan gets his biggest ratings with finale

Conan O’Brien’s last appearance as host of “The Tonight Show.”

After weeks of controversy over NBC’s efforts to return Jay Leno to the late-night schedule and O’Brien’s decision to leave rather than get pushed back to a post-midnight starting time, 10.3 million people turned out last Friday to watch his final broadcast, according to figures released today by the Nielsen Co.

That was his largest audience since moving into the “Tonight Show” job last June 1. His premiere telecast had drawn 9.2 million viewers.

For the week, “The Tonight Show” averaged 5.3 million viewers, leaving David Letterman and his “Late Show” far behind with 3.9 million. That was O’Brien’s best showing since his first week on the air, when he averaged 6.1 million.

Letterman still leads in the season-to-date figures, however, averaging 4.2 million viewers to O’Brien’s 2.8 million. Leno was averaging more than 5 million viewers when he hosted “The Tonight Show.”

Leno alluded to that differential in the interview with Oprah Winfrey that was broadcast today. “If you look at what the ratings were, it was already destructive to the franchise,” he said of O’Brien’s showing. “…This was the first time in the 60-year history of ‘The Tonight Show’ that ‘The Tonight Show’ would have lost money and that’s what it comes down to. It’s really just a matter of dollars and cents. If the numbers had been there, they wouldn’t have asked me.”

Anne Hathaway gets Hasty Pudding

Actress Anne Hathaway has collected her Hasty Pudding woman of the year award in Massachusetts.

She was honored with a street parade followed by playful mickey taking, after which she received her award from Harvard University men in drag.

Hathaway joins the list of past recipients which include Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn and Meryl Streep.

The prize is handed out every year by Harvard’s undergraduate drama troupe – a tradition dating back to 1795.

Hathaway also had to “slay” someone dressed as a dragon and was made to show she could sing.

After receiving her award, she gave her acceptance speech which she had written as a poem.

She said: “Please accept my heartfelt thanks and amazement that you have chosen my few humble offerings as celebrated entertainment.

“I will stand tall as I stand on this list, of hasty pudding honorees – you get the gist.

“Let us proceed with this day full of cheer – thank you for making me your Hasty Pudding this year.”

Justin Timberlake is to receive the Hasty Pudding Man of the Year award on 5 February.

Last year, Bridget Jones’s Diary actress Renee Zellweger donned a fat suit as she received her woman of the year award, while Spider-Man actor James Franco was named man of the year.

Johnny Depp still alive

Depp isn’t dead! Bizarre as that may sound, this rather obvious piece of news has taken the online world by storm, as it was recently ‘reported’ that actor Johnny Depp had died in a car crash in France.

The false report surfaced around Saturday last week, with a fake CNN webpage on a website called angelfire.com showing a picture of a car crash and reporting that Depp had died. ‘Alcohol is most likely involved,’ the reports added. The online world of bloggers and tweeters immediately started to buzz with shocked ‘RIP Johnny’ messages.

However, the actor’s rep, Robin Baum, was quoted by a website as saying, “He isn’t dead.” Depp is the latest in a series of celebs to have been ‘killed off’ in this manner, and this isn’t even the first time for him. Hollywood stars Taylor Lautner, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Hanks and Miley Cyrus have all been declared dead at some point or the other in the recent past.
